The Kantha embroidery originates from the practice of quilting rags and embroidering them. They come from East Bengal districts Jessore, Faridabad etc,. The special significance of the Kantha quilt is not only in its artistic elegance but its vivid narration of legends and tales of heroism. In the finest Kanthas the embroidery stitches are made in such a way that the design appears exactly same on both the sides. The fabric used for kanthas are old sarees placed neatly together in layers till the desired thickness. The fold is quilted in white thread. Motifs are human and animal figures, floral and foliage. The colors are blue, green, red, white, yellow and black. The stitched used is the running stitch.
